Goals & Objectives

Goals
Our goals are to train physicians who are competent in the practice of pediatric emergency medicine, the care of acutely ill or injured children, as well as being capable of assuming leadership roles in research, teaching and administrative aspects of pediatric emergency medicine.

Objectives

  • To provide an excellent clinical experience in the management of pediatric patients of all ages with a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries.

  • To train physicians in the immediate recognition and treatment of life threatening illnesses including medical, surgical and psychiatric emergencies.

  • To train physicians in the recognition, evaluation and management of pediatric physical and sexual abuse.

  • To provide physicians with the skills necessary to meet the emotional needs of patients, their families and the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) staff during stressful events, such as sudden illness, injury and death.

  • To facilitate good working relationships with colleagues and consultants.

  • To train physicians to be concerned with prevention of injuries and illnesses.

  • To provide experience in teaching and supervising other residents and students rotating in the PED.

  • To provide opportunities for physicians to acquire skills in oral presentation, medical writing and research design.

  • To develop an understanding of the administrative aspects of a PED.
