Research

Research experience is an essential part of the training of subspecialists. In addition, the ACGME program requirements for research in pediatric subspecialties must be met:

"Each fellow must design and conduct a scholarly project in his or her subspecialty area with the guidance of the fellowship director and a designated mentor. The program must provide a scholarship oversight committee for each fellow to evaluate the fellow’s progress as related to scholarly activity. The scholarly experience must begin in the first year and continue for the entire period of training. Time must be adequate to allow for the development of requisite skills, project completion, and presentation of results to a local scholarship oversight committee established for this review."

To comply with the research requirements for certification by the ABP each fellow must perform an independent research project under the supervision of a faculty member(s). Fellows' research projects are reviewed during the monthly emergency medicine outcome research committee meetings and quarterly meetings of the scholarship oversight committee. Protected research time is available during most clinical rotations in the PED. Fellows are free to select a topic of interest within the available resources of the emergency medicine department and pediatric emergency medicine divisions at both UFCOM-J in Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital/Baptist. Fellows may carry out more than one independent project.
