Residency training at UF College of Medicine - Jacksonville occurs primarily at Shands Jacksonville, a 696-bed not-for-profit tertiary care teaching facility. Shands Jacksonville has the only Level I trauma center in Northeast Florida and a state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Center and Neuroscience Institute.
In July 2006, the Florida Proton Therapy Institute at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville began offering proton beam therapy for cutting edge treatment of solid tissue tumors. The $125 million center houses the University of Florida Department of Radiation Oncology, and is the fourth such facility in the U.S.
The residency training program offers a well developed night float system, full access to the Up-to-Date clinical database from any hospital work station and for interested trainees, research opportunities that are fully integrated into the curriculum. We offer both categorical and preliminary PGY-1 positions. There are also fellowship programs in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, interventional cardiology, medical oncology and nephrology.
The Jacksonville campus has had an ACGME approved Internal Medicine residency training program since 1961, and the program became a division of the J. Hillis Miller Health Center of the University of Florida in 1969. The Jacksonville training program was first affiliated with the Duval Medical Center, which became University Hospital in 1971, and, in 1999, Shands Jacksonville. Growing from five Internal Medicine trainees in 1961, the program now consists of 44 residents, and is lead by two fourth year chief medical residents and three program directors. As we move into the future, the program will continue to build on its rich training history and strong academic traditions. Consistent with the contemporary nature of our training platform, is the mega team concept for ward teams, as well as an infrastructure of resident self-governance.
In addition to the above professional opportunities, Jacksonville, Florida is an ideal place to live and work - it is home to perfect weather, abundant beaches, unlimited outdoor sports and the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars.
Please explore our website in its entirety and contact us if you have questions or need further information. We know this is one of the most important decisions of your professional career.
