Curriculum
Goals & Objectives
During fellowship training, particular emphasis is placed on learning about commonly occurring diseases such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders, metabolic bone disease including osteoporosis, as well as disorders of less frequent incidence such as those of the pituitary, adrenal and gonads. Emphasis is also placed on the normal and abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and lipids. The overall value of fellowship training is the necessary detailed exposure to the diagnosis and management of a complement of diseases which will be frequently encountered throughout the career of an endocrinologist in his/her anticipated role as a respected consultant in the community or in an academic setting.
Fellows direct daily morning rounds with the clinical team and coordinate the consultation service at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center. Although each clinical rotation is different, the fellow attends at least 4 clinics/week.
Our curriculum includes training in pediatric endocrinology at Nemours Children’s Clinic Jacksonville and reproductive endocrinology at the Jacksonville Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The teaching methods consist of assigning the fellows significant responsibilities for patient care in a carefully supervised environment. Teaching and supervision are provided by endocrinology faculty. These experiences are supplemented by a number of didactic conferences which focus on clinical and basic science aspects of endocrinology and metabolism. Based on the complex needs of patients with common endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis, fellows are presented an approach in which medical problems are integrated with cultural, socioeconomic and behavioral issues.
Fellows will become expert at procedures such as thyroid ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration as well as the performance and interpretation of dynamic testing in endocrinology. Mastery in interpretation of bone density testing and experience in use of insulin infusion pumps are expectations during the fellowship.
