Welcome from the Division Chief

Michael L. Sands, M.D., M.P.H. and T.M.
Welcome to the Web site for the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, Division of Infectious Diseases. Our division’s mission is to provide excellence in the diagnosis and management of all infectious diseases. We provide inpatient and outpatient infectious disease consultations, pre- and post-travel consultation and direct hospital infection control activities at Shands Jacksonville. Under contract with Duval County Health Department, our division provides medical direction, diagnostic and outpatient care for the Duval County Health Department's Communicable Diseases Clinics, including the diagnosis and treatment of sexual transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, refugee health screenings and pre- and post-exposure rabies immunizations. We also provide consultative oversight of the county health department's communicable diseases epidemiology section.
Four UF ABIM-certified infectious disease specialists make up the division, with involvement from the microbiology directors at Shands Jacksonville and Baptist Medical Center, the pediatric infectious disease fellowship director and the infectious disease division members at Mayo Clinic/Jacksonville. All of these individuals are involved in our two-year, ACGME-accredited infectious disease fellowship training program.
Clinical research maintains a strong focus among our division members, particularly in the area of HIV clinical trials.
Thank you for your interest in our division and we encourage you to learn more about our fellowship training program, physicians and the health care services they provide. For any additional questions, please contact us.
