Infectious Disease Fellowship

Mission

Our mission is to train subspecialists in adult infectious diseases who will be clinically and culturally competent in addressing the infectious disease (ID) health care needs of all adults, through excellence in patient care, education, clinical research, antibiotic stewardship and infection prevention and control.

Program Aims

  • To develop ID specialists capable of providing consultative ID services in inpatient and outpatient settings
    • Fellows receive expertise training in patient care through transplant clinic, continuity of care clinic, hepatitis C clinic, wound care clinic, HIV clinic, in-patient pediatrics, hospital consults and MICU rotations.
  • To develop specialists with expertise in the clinical practice of HIV medicine
    • Fellows are given the opportunity to rotate through the rainbow clinic (HIV clinic) during their elective rotation, in addition to their regular continuity of care clinic.
  • To graduate fellows with the skills necessary to consult for a hospital infection prevention (IPC) program
    • ID fellow to round with infection control team for 4 half-days/week during elective rotations.
  • To provide the fellows with the experience needed to advise a hospital antibiotic stewardship program
    • Collaboration with other UF Health departments to enhance training in wound care, HIV medicine, hospital infection prevention and control and antimicrobial stewardship.
  • To provide fellows with teaching expertise in preparation for potential academic careers
    • Fellows participate in the institutional fellows as teachers seminar. This day long educational seminar focuses on the leadership roles of a fellow.
    • Fellows participate in the education of the medical students, international medical students, visiting residents and the internal medicine residents that rotate through the division monthly.
    • The fellowship lecture schedule assigns the fellow to present a Grand Rounds presentation and case presentation to the department of medicine.

Goals and Objectives

  • To train competent consultants in clinical infectious diseases
  • To foster skill in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases
  • To allow physicians to explore teaching and research as possible career pathways in infectious disease.
