The UF College of Medicine Jacksonville's academic roots stem not only from medical education, but also from faculty-driven clinical research. UF Jacksonville faculty physicians participate in advanced clinical trials to provide patients the latest in diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitative services.
The campus has its own Office of Research Affairs, which is part of the Division of Sponsored Research located in Gainesville, Fla. The Jacksonville office assists faculty and staff in obtaining and administering internal and external research funds. Specifically, research staff members are available to assist faculty and staff with budget development, to procure application materials, submission of proposals, industry and federal contract negotiations, and to answer questions regarding university or agency policies dealing with grant and contract applications or accounts. The ORA staff members also negotiate all confidentiality and clinical research agreements for the Jacksonville faculty.
External Research Funding
The University of Florida Health Science Center Jacksonville received $8.9 million in external research funding during the 2006-2007 fiscal year and currently has over 200 on going externally funded studies. Over the last three years, the external research funding at UFHSCJ has increased over 50 percent.
Internal Research Funding
The UFHSCJ Deans Office offers two internal grant competitions annually, one for Jacksonville faculty, and the other for Jacksonville residents and fellows. In 2007 alone the UFHSCJ Deans Office awarded over $100,000 in internal research funding.
Research Support Services in Jacksonville
The College of Medicine Jacksonville offers on-campus biostatistical consulting and research support services to faculty, residents, fellows and other researchers.
As a service to faculty members, staff and employees of the College of Medicine Jacksonville, the UF Jacksonville Institutional Review Board provides guidance and assistance in preparing proposed projects that involve human subjects in research. The IRB also reviews and grants approval in accordance with the Federal Regulations governing human subject research.
The Jacksonville IRB currently oversees approximately 375* active studies and in 2007 reviewed 200* new studies.
