Shands Jacksonville
The 696-licensed-bed Shands Jacksonville academic medical center operates the only Level 1 trauma center in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. It's helicopter transport system, TraumaOne, is also used for patients with acute ischemic strokes. Patients transported by TraumaOne are evaluated for intravenous or intra-arterial thrombolysis.
A state-of-the-art proton therapy cancer treatment center, only the third of its magnitude in the United States, became operational in 2006. This center is expected to attract tertiary referrals for brain tumor patients from across the country.
Neuroscience Institute
Located one block south of the main hospital in Shands Plaza Tower 1, the Shands JacksonvilleNeuroscience Institute encompasses three floors and contains the UF College of Medicine Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, a 8-bed sleep laboratory, the institute's research office, EEG and EMG services, neuropsychology offices and neurology resident offices. In addition, the neurology department operates a 6-bed inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit and an epilepsy surgery program.
Shands at the University of Florida
With 570 beds, Shands at the University of Florida serves as a major referral center for tertiary pediatric cases. The campus is approximately 80 miles from Jacksonville. Free housing opportunities are available to residents rotating at the Gainesville campus.
UF McKnight Brain Institute
The McKnight Brain Institute is located on the UF campus (Gainesville) and is one of the country's largest institutions devoted to basic research focusing on the nervous system.
Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital
Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital is a 153-bed inpatient facility dedicated to the care of patients with a wide variety of rehabilitation needs.
