Best-selling FISH! Author Makes Splash in Jacksonville

Published: Wednesday, November 19, 2003

Jacksonville, Fla.- Best-selling author Stephen Lundin will speak to first-year medical residents at the University of Florida Health Science Center Jacksonville on Thursday. Lundin's book FISH! has continuously been a Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Business Week business best seller for more than two years and has appeared frequently on the Publishers Weekly, USA Today and Barnes and Nobles best seller lists.

Developed by staff in the University of Florida Office of Educational Affairs, this daylong seminar is built around the internationally acclaimed author and the fundamentals of his "FISH! Philosophy." The event is designed to help these new doctors enhance their professional competencies and communications skills.

The FISH! Philosophy is a set of four connected principles that are the foundation for a healthy workplace and life:

Play: Work made fun gets done, especially when we choose to do serious tasks in a lighthearted, spontaneous way. Play is not just an activity, it's a state of mind that brings new energy to tasks and sparks creative solutions.

Make Their Day: When you make someone's day (or moment) through a small act of kindness or unforgettable engagement, you can turn even routine encounters into special memories.

Be There: The glue in our humanity is in being fully present for one another. Being there is also a great way to practice wholeheartedness and fight burnout because it's the halfhearted tasks you perform while juggling other things that wear you out.

Choose Your Attitude: When you look for the worst, you'll find it everywhere. When you learn you have the power to choose your response to what life brings, you can look for the best and find opportunities you never imagined possible.

The seminar begins at 8 a.m. in the Learning Resource Center Auditorium. Although this event is closed to the public, members of the media are invited to attend Lundin's talk and interview the author and residents. Please contact Beth Broyles at 244-3184 if interested.
