Dr. Robert Chapa to head new unit at UF Health

UF Health Jacksonville announced the formation of a new occupational medicine program to be led by one of the leading occupational medicine experts in the region, Robert M. Chapa Sr., M.D.

The UF Health Occupational Medicine Program will assist employers in creating safer work environments, improving the health and well-being of employees through injury prevention programs and wellness education, maintaining or improving productivity and profitability with plans tailored to the specific needs of a company, and increasing employee productivity with expedited return to work.

“UF Health has presented me with an incredible opportunity to create a comprehensive occupational medicine program for businesses throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia,” Chapa said. “We bring unique expertise to providing a variety of occupational medicine services, from workers’ compensation to employee wellness.”

The program is staffed and coordinated by a team of board-certified physicians who work closely with caregivers and other UF Health physicians offering more than 100 specialty and subspecialty services. Chapa’s team has more than 25 years of experience caring for injured workers and managing their care.

Chapa is also now a part of the University of Florida College of Medicine − Jacksonville’s faculty, joining the organization as an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

“We’re extremely fortunate to have someone with Dr. Chapa’s background and experience join our team,” said Daniel R. Wilson, M.D., Ph.D., UF vice president for health affairs and dean of the UF College of Medicine − Jacksonville. “His 25 years of experience speak for themselves. Dr. Chapa is recognized as a leader in occupational medicine, building his own network of practices focused on developing comprehensive plans based on the specific needs of each company. His addition will make UF Health a leader in this field.”

“UF Health and the University of Florida are two of the most recognized brands in the country for good reason,” Chapa said. “The care and compassion shown by the physicians, caregivers and other staff are well known throughout our area and beyond. The people here are the reason why our reputation is so good, and I am glad to now be a part of it.”
