Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) Program
Both campuses of the UF College of Nursing offer full-time and part-time options for M.S.N. study and a selection of advanced practice nursing tracks [view all tracks]. Specialty tracks that can be completed through the Jacksonville campus are:
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program
- Adult Nurse Practitioner
- Clinical Nurse Leader
- Medical-Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist
- Nurse Midwivery
- Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
- Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Students are admitted each fall semester. Curriculum plans vary from four to five semesters for full-time students and from seven to nine semesters for part-time students. Graduates are eligible for state (FL) and national certification as nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and clinical specialists as relevant to their area of specialization.
Students who have previously-earned M.S.N. degrees are able to enroll as a post-master's student in order to complete requirements for nurse practitioner licensure or for advanced practice in each of the advanced practice nursing tracks. Curriculum plans are individually arranged based on previous education.
The goal of the M.S.N. program is to prepare nurses for advanced practice and leadership roles. The education program includes both didactic work and clinical practice experience. Each student completes the graduate-nursing core including health promotion, nursing theory, research, statistics, ethics and health care policy and financing. The advanced practice core includes pathophysiology, health assessment and pharmacology. Specialty track sources include didactic content and clinical experiences in the student's specialty area.
Core courses are offered at the college's Gainesville and Jacksonville campuses. Interactive audio-visual communication is a component of some courses. Several courses are Web based to increase daytime access to the optional clinical experiences, and almost all courses have a Web-enhanced component.
The college's M.S.N. program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The college is a member of the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing of the Southern Regional Board and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Graduates are eligible for the relevant national certification examination of each area of clinical specialization and for State of Florida certification as nurse practitioners and clinical specialists.
