University of Florida Pediatrics - Division of Neonatology

Research

The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville Division of Neonatology actively engages in both clinical and non-clinical outcomes research, with an emphasis on mortality and morbidity, cardiopulmonary issues, physiology, chronic lung disease, nutrition and the epidemiology of Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

We are currently participating in multiple active studies: the National Children’s Study, a large 25 year study designed to examine the effects of environmental influences on the health and development of more than 100,000 children across the United States, following them until they are 21 years old; the Feeding Study in Premature Infants, a study designed to improve the human breast milk fortifier used for premature infants; a Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) study, designed to evaluate the potential causes of NEC in our Neonatal population; and a Fluconazole Prophylaxis Study designed to assess the efficacy of Fluconazole in the prevention of Candidiasis in infants weighing less than 750 grams birth weight.

The division has previously participated in two research studies involving Inhaled Nitric Oxide (iNO) in very ill premature infants. The first study evaluated the use of iNO in the first 3 days of life to determine whether a short course of iNO therapy would improve the rate at which these infants survive without chronic lung disease. The second study was designed to evaluate whether or not the long term use of iNO would decrease the incidence of chronic lung disease. Both studies evaluated the neurodevelopmental outcomes of surviving infants through 2 years of age.

The Division of Neonatology also currently participates in an International Database designed to collect information on all infants admitted into the NICUs at both Shands and Wolfson Children’s Hospitals. The information collected in the database provides the Neonatologists a way of benchmarking their level of care against other top institutions in the United States and the international medical community.

Many of our distinguished physicians have published articles that have appeared in pediatric and surgical peer reviewed journals.
