Curriculum & Rotations
Inpatient Rotation
- The inpatient rotation will take place at Wolfson Children's Hospital and Shands Jacksonville.
- Fellows will see new patients on consultation as requested by primary care physicians, surgical specialists and other pediatric subspecialists. They will also see patients admitted to the Infectious Diseases service.
- Fellows will follow patients until resolution of infectious disease problem or until discharge from the hospital and will write progress notes on these patients daily.
- Each patient seen by the fellows will be presented to the inpatient attending and didactic teaching will be provided for each case.
- Under the guidance of the inpatient attending, fellows will assume a supervisory and teaching role over pediatric and family practice residents and medical students doing an elective rotation in Infectious Diseases or doing their inpatient rotation.
- Fellows will answer telephone calls from patients/parents and physicians requesting advice. They will obtain the pertinent information and discuss with the inpatient attending further recommendations. They should document the call in writing.
- Fellows doing the inpatient rotation will see hospital follow ups in the outpatient clinic on Wednesdays, allowing them to follow the natural history of acute or chronic infections.
Outpatient Rotation
- The outpatient rotation will take place at the UF Rainbow Center at Shands Jacksonville, the Infectious Disease Clinic at the Howard Building (Baptist Medical Center), and at the STD clinic/Duval County Health Department.
- Fellows will see patients during HIV Clinic at the Rainbow Center on Tuesdays. The outpatient attending will assign patients to fellows according to the instructional value of the visit.
- Fellows will attend the weekly multidisciplinary care conference for HIV patients on Fridays.
- Fellows will see patients in the Infectious Diseases Clinic at the Infectious Disease Clinic at the Howard Building (Baptist Medical Center) on Wednesdays.
- Fellows will attend the STD clinic/DCHD for half a day, four times per year.
- Each patient seen by the fellows will be presented to an attending and didactic teaching will be provided for each case.
Microbiology Laboratory Rotation
- This is a 4-week rotation at the Microbiology Laboratory/Baptist Medical Center campus.
- Fellows will be required to participate on a daily basis Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 2 PM.
- Weekly meetings will be scheduled with the Educational Coordinators to review the fellow's progress and address any specials needs.
- Weekly meetings will be scheduled with the Director of the Infectious Disease Laboratories as an adjunct to the practical laboratory training.
- A check-off list stating the minimum performance requirements should be completed by the end of a successful rotation.
- Completion of the list (see 5 above) is the responsibility of the fellow.
The outline above is intended as a guide for the ID Fellow. Although she/he will not have the opportunity to observe all of the tests listed above, nor will they be able to discuss all aspects of testing with the technologists or Director during their rotation, they are encouraged to supplement their practical experience with additional reading in order to ensure that they have fulfilled a comprehensive laboratory training rotation. Fellows are expected to attend the monthly Laboratory/Infectious Diseases Rounds (Microbiology Conference) and the monthly rounds at the Laboratory. They are also encouraged to participate in community continuing education programs such as the Jacksonville Area Microbiology (J.A.M.) Society meetings held the first Tuesday of every month at 5:30 PM, and the Annual First Coast Infectious Disease/Clinical Microbiology Symposium generally held during the spring of each year.
Epidemiology and Infection Control
- Fellows will attend the infection control committee meetings at Wolfson Children's Hospital.
- Fellows will attend lectures on infection control delivered by program faculty.
- Fellows will complete the IDSA/SHEA infection control fellows’ online course by the end of their 2nd year of training.
- Fellows will use the infection control/hospital epidemiology resource manual created especially for fellows.
- Fellows will be provided reading lists and materials including:
- Hospital epidemiology/infection control journal of SHEA
- Infection control chapters from "Principles and Practice of Pediatric Infectious Diseases", Long, Pickering and Prober, editors; and "The Textbook of Pediatric Infectious Diseases", Feigin and Cherry, editors.
- Infection control textbooks (e.g. "Hospital Infection Control" Bennett, editor).
- Epidemiology textbooks (e.g. "Epidemiology Principles and Methods" written by McMahon and Trichopoulos).

Teaching Skills
- Fellows are required to attend a teaching skills seminar organized by the Office of Educational Affairs.
- Fellows are required to attend the Ethics Conference organized by the Pediatrics core program.
- Communication, teaching skills and ethical principles are also taught by faculty through role modeling during specific rotations.
- Under the guidance of faculty, fellows will assume a supervisory and teaching role over pediatric/family practice residents and medical students doing an elective rotation. Fellows will do bedside teaching, participate in morning reports and meet with residents daily to discuss patient's progress and formulate plans.
- Conferences
- Fellows are responsible for presenting at the following conferences:
- Clinical case conference (monthly)
- Journal club (monthly)
- Combined Peds/Adult Infectious Diseases conference (monthly)
- Infectious Diseases Curriculum Conference (monthly)
- Laboratory/Infectious Diseases Rounds (annually)
- Research conference (quarterly)
- Peds ID Morbidity and Mortality conference (quarterly)
- Fellows are required to present Pediatric Grand Rounds at Wolfson Children's Hospital at least once in a 3-year period.
- Fellows also participate in the Division's Multidisciplinary Clinical Conference, which occurs weekly.
- The fellows are always supervised by a faculty member for their presentations at conferences.
- Attendance of fellows at these conferences is required, monitored, kept in writing, and is part of the fellows' evaluations.
Other Rotations
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
- Fellows have the opportunity to spend a month at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. This rotation enhances fellows' education and training in the management of infections in high-risk hosts (S/P transplant, cancer and chemotherapy, etc).
- Fellows will see new patients on consultation, as well as patients admitted to the Infectious Diseases service.
- Fellows will follow patients until resolution of infectious disease problem or until discharge from the hospital and will write progress notes on these patients as necessary.
- Each patient seen by the fellows will be presented to the inpatient attending and didactic teaching will be provided for each case.
Pediatric Tuberculosis Clinic/Duval County Health Department
- Fellows have the opportunity to attend the Pediatric TB clinics at the Health Department. These clinics occur every Thursday morning. This activity enhances the fellows' experience managing children with TB, but also gives them the opportunity to learn about the role of the Health Department and public health issues related to TB, such as contact investigations, reporting, direct observed therapy, etc.
- Each patient seen by the fellows will be presented to an attending and didactic teaching will be provided for each case.
- The attending will assign patients to fellows according to the instructional value of the visit.
Medical Economics Rotation
This two-week elective in offered to 3rd year fellows. It consists of a series of didactic lectures together with practical experiences by their rotation through the Managed Care Office, a private practice office, advocacy speaker, Medical Business/Billing, and Risk Management offices. The elective is organized through Dr. Thomas Chiu, MD, MBA, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. This rotation enhances the fellows’ understanding of the impact of managed care and other business and legal issues on both professional and clinical practice.
