Surgical science is a continuum of educational experience. It is practiced by human beings on human beings, and is liable to all of the vagaries of human endeavor. As a combination of psychomotor skill and intellectual acumen, surgical care may be undermined by single or combined shortcomings in either of these areas. Surgery must therefore be practiced with the understanding that the unexpected will be encountered and must be explained. This can only occur in an intellectual environment that strives to analyze every aspect of surgical care in a manner that enhances understanding, and, in turn, eliminates recurrence.
