The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville Section of Breast Surgery focuses on diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the breast.

We provide a multidisciplinary, team-based approach to the evaluation and treatment of breast disease. In addition to providing information and support, our physicians help each patient understand her diagnosis and treatment options so she can feel comfortable about making the right decision for herself.

Our services encompass the entire spectrum of patient needs which makes our team truly comprehensive. During a patient's course of treatment, she may see a board-certified and fellowship-trained breast surgeon, dedicated breast radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and plastic surgeons. Genetic counseling and risk assessment are provided by a professional genetic counselor. Individual treatment plans are formed based on the stage of the disease, family history and risk factors, other medical conditions, age, and pathology and X-ray results, as well as the patient's social and psychological needs. Protocols for treating breast cancer are similar to those listed on the American Cancer Society's website and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's national guidelines.

Many of our breast conservation procedures are performed using the oncoplastic technique. Oncoplastic surgery can maintain the breast shape and contour while allowing adequate removal of the cancerous lesion. When possible, surgical scars can be hidden around the areola or crease of the breast. Breast conservation therapies as well as nipple- and skin-sparing surgeries are performed by UF surgeons at UF Health Jacksonville and other area hospitals. We work closely with our plastic surgery team to provide a single operation and immediate reconstruction to patients who may require mastectomy.

During a weekly multidisciplinary breast conference individualized management plans are created for each patient. With the help of our breast nurse navigator, appointments are efficiently coordinated to reduce the number of clinic or hospital visits.
