Research

Welcome from the Associate Chair

The department of surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville is committed to fostering research by the faculty, residents and fellows. This institution has been engaged in clinically applied research for many years and is enriched by the presence of faculty who have demonstrated excellence in performing research and in training new investigators. Nationally recognized research conducted at UF Health Jacksonville by the faculty of the department of surgery is influencing clinical practice in many areas, including:

  • Acute care and trauma surgery
  • General surgery and surgical oncology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Plastic surgery
  • Vascular surgery

In addition to clinical research, faculty are engaged in enhancing the academic learning environment by conducting research focused on education.

Our faculty have varied research interests. Refer to our faculty research and recent publications .pdf (Adobe PDF Document) for more information.

Funding received from federal (such as the National Institutes of Health and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), state, private foundation, industry, and internal university grants allow our faculty to execute their research projects utilizing necessary resources essential to successful project execution. This includes oversight and implementation of industry sponsored trials (drug, device or observational), investigator-led research from other institutions seeking multi-center trials, and departmental investigator-led studies by faculty, residents, and acute care and minimally invasive surgery fellows.

Departmental research staff provide assistance throughout the lifecycle of research projects. A few of the specialized services offered by our research staff include: assistance with IRB correspondence, financial grant management, laboratory specimen processing, data and participant management. Along with assistance from the Office of Research, the departmental research staff ensure research is conducted according to university policy and per federal regulations.

Our department also has a Precision Cancer Survivorship Cohort, which leverages many data resources, including the OneFlorida Clinical Research Consortium to support investigations designed to understand and inform more personalized approaches to cancer survivorship, with a focus on accelerated aging and access to care.
