How to Apply

Surgery Residency

For specific eligibility requirements, please refer to the GME benefits, requirements and resources page.

To apply to our program please go to the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) site.

General minimum requirements for interview consideration in surgery are the following:

  • Must have completed and passed the USMLE step I and II
  • Must have a minimum of 3 letters of recommendation, with 1 letter from the current surgery chair at your medical school
  • Must have a high pass or honors grade on both surgery and internal medicine 3rd year core clerkships

The selection process begins with submission of the usual credentials for fourth year medical students through ERAS. Applicants are invited to undergo the interview process, preceded by an informal gathering with current residents the evening before the interview day. The interview day begins with the weekly grand rounds, followed by a group session with the chair to review the overall design, goals and objectives of the residency program. Applicants will be taken on a tour of the main campus facilities including the simulation center. A combination of three to four interviews including faculty and PGY-4 senior residents will be held over the course of the day. At the completion of this process, the faculty meet to review the evaluations and develop the final rank order.

Of note, the COVID pandemic has changed our interview procedures. We have now completely transitioned to virtual interviews and tours. While it is to be determined how long this will continue, we look forward to meeting in person once again in the future.
