The University of Florida Division of Transplant Surgery, which staffs the Shands Jacksonville Transplant Center, is the only transplant unit in North Florida specializing exclusively in kidney transplants. Having performed the first organ transplant in Jacksonville in 1989, the center has completed more than 860 kidney transplants and is recognized throughout the state and the region for its comprehensive care of patients with renal disease.

The division provides services which include pretransplant evaluation, inpatient operative and postoperative care for living donors and kidney transplant recipients and outpatient follow-up for patients who received organ transplants in Jacksonville and elsewhere. Coupled with our Laboratory for Transplantation and Cellular Immunology, the center employs the latest techniques in immunologic assessment, anti-rejection/immunosuppressive management and consultative aspects of transplant related care.

The division enjoys actively collaborating with all relevant transplant organizations across the U.S., including the United Network for Organ Sharing, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. These important liaisons assure appropriate outcomes reporting and access to scientific and quality assurance data, which are important in daily patient care.

The mission of the UF Division of Transplant Surgery is to provide an easily assessable, comprehensive service in kidney transplantation for patients, providers and all concerned with end stage kidney disease. We are committed to excellence in patient care, being a resource service to referring physicians, growing professional expertise and continuing involvement in organizations facilitating organ donation and transplantation.
