Procedures For Visiting Students

Electives Offered

For more information on electives offered at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, please contact the Office of Educational Affairs at (904) 244-5128 or visit our Student Rotations by Department page.

Please note that a visiting student may not displace a University of Florida student from any elective. For this reason, visiting students may not be accepted for an elective until mid-May. Please also note that visiting students will be approved for no more than three rotations in an academic year at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville.

Participation

To participate as a visiting student, you must:

  • Be a fourth year student in good standing at a medical school which is accredited by the LCME and which is a member, or an affiliated member, of the Association of American Medical Colleges, a fully accredited U.S. Osteopathic School, or a clinical year PA student in a masters-level or higher program accredited by the ARC-PA.

  • Have the permission of your academic dean to take an extramural course outside the institution in which you are enrolled.

  • The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville will be using the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) to receive visiting student applications starting April 1, 2009. If you are a medical student from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited school, please complete and submit a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates.

  • For other eligible students, submit a completed Application for Extramural Course application via fax to (904) 244-8997

  • All students must be covered by malpractice insurance, have personal health insurance, have completed local/state, and national criminal background checks, and passed an official random drug test. The University of Florida DOES NOT provide visiting students with malpractice insurance coverage. Our assumption is your home institution will continue to provide this coverage.

  • Complete the Background and Drug Screen Affidavit regarding your background check and drug test. This must be signed by a Notary Public.

  • Complete HIPAA Training and sign the UF Confidentiality Statement and Shands Confidentiality Agreement. If you’ve completed HIPAA Training at your institution within a year of your rotation start date and can provide documentation stating so, we will accept this.

  • Complete a Parking Application.

  • Wear proper business attire, white laboratory coats, and your home school identification badge if participating in clinical rotations.
